It was great this last weekend to come across four inspiring stories in the national press. All of the persons involved are over 50, three women and one man, all have spotted a sound business idea and turned it into an online business! We truly live in a world of opportunity and how I wish more could just see it. These four people did and took action. Yes! Action is the key! The man is launching his first business at 58, selling large-print books online. He got his idea while trying to source books for his elderly mother who is visually impaired. After returning from overseas one lady could not get a job, she's an accountant, deemed to be too old at 50. How stupid is that? She is founding her online business, selling glamorous nightwear. She got her idea from her mother who had always worn beautiful lingerie. Another lady has left her job to start a company that provides an emergency medical record in different languages for people travelling overseas. The record can be carried as a card or accessed via a web site. At 52 she shows vision, courage and determination to make her idea work. Now for the real inspiration! A lady artist who worked as a freelancer for many years. She got her first PC in 1998 and designed an animated Christmas Card for sending over the Internet. Sent it to 30 friends and went on holiday. When she returned she had 1,600 e-mails requesting information about her cards. In December last her web site had 22.7million visitors and at age 62 her online business is now valued at around $25million. Inspirational or what? Now that really is seizing an online business opportunity. Why do I find all this so inspiring? I tend to be an enthusiast. I also still enjoy being in business, I still enjoy learning, and like some of the people mentioned by being focussed it energises me. This energy, my imagination and business experience mean that I see opportunities all the time. This is not meant to be boastful. These examples are inspirational because they illustrate that now we have means of communicating world wide (the Internet) we can turn almost any idea into an online business opportunity. Gender, age, background, nationality - it does not matter. The knack is, realise that because something already exists, eg., books, nightwear, medical information, Greetings Cards, etc., there still may be an opening for an online business. People with imagination, using that imagination to come up with business ideas and taking action, action is the key, will still continue to succeed for years to come.
